Product Information
Returning for a second lap on the PlayStation 2, Gallop Racer 2003: A New Breed once again challenges players to take the reins of horse stable management. A mandatory tutorial walks players through the various aspects of this equestrian-themed sports game, of which the actual races are but one aspect of play. The race itself is composed of three segments, each offering a slightly different gameplay mechanic and requiring a different strategy. In order to break from the starting gate as quickly as possible, players need to be successful with a series of carefully timed button presses. The middle portion of the race requires jockeys to ease into the position in the pack that best suits the horse's unique temperament and sensibilities. Failure to do so will drain the horse's stamina quickly. The final segment of the race requires measured use of the whip in order to spur the horse on, as excessive whipping will cause speed to drop significantly.
Away from the track, players will need to engage in the day-to-day activities of scheduling new race meetings, purchasing new horses, breeding new champions (young foals take on the combined attributes of both parents), and placing a wagers on the outcome of upcoming events. Although the title offers over 2,500 horses, players are encouraged to breed new champions, and are assisted in doing so by a series of mini-games that affect the final statistics of the newborn. The jockey, too, can improve as the season endures. In a departure from Tecmo's previous effort, Gallop Racer 2003 allows gambling during the actual season, however this revised system only allows players to bet on their own horses. Winnings can be used to purchase new equipment and facilities, or put toward the acquisition of new horses.
I love this game. I find it very relaxing. Most of your time is spent managing your horses (picking horses, finding appropriate races for them, breeding, training, etc.). The actual racing part is fun and all, but I can't say I've ever put it on free mode and raced. One of the most unique things about this game is that one must be subtle in order to get the best performance from the horse. Speeding up and slowing down too quickly rob the horse of stamina, just like real life.
I thought that this game was great. Much better than the first and second one made but I was a little disappointed that I wasn't able to fully train the young horse like in the game before. Over all its a great game.
For a PS2 game its really fun to play. Pick your horses and build up your barn from horses you breed. After your horses win and gain experience they qualify for races with the best horses. You can win the biggest races in the world against the best horses. Fun and can bet as you go.
This is not a great game, but you have no other choices.
They just don't know how to make the game fun. These game makers
need to step into D&B and play some Derby Owner's Club by SEGA.
They just don't get it!
